You have to manually edit them with Paint.NET. Just open the image for the front of the train, then find an image of the rollsign you want, insert it into Paint.NET, and position it.

If it's DJ Hammer's R38, here are they keys to change the rollsigns:

8 - Northbound Destination (e.g Franklin Avenue)
9 - Southbound Destination (e.g Prospect Park)
0 - Route Assignment (e.g (S) Franklin Av Shuttle)

Some trains have animated rollsigns, you will need to view the readme if it has animated rollsigns.

In other trains without this feature, just edit them with Paint.NET, Microsoft Paint, etc. (OS X users, i recommend Paintbrush, Linux Users, Kolourpaint.)

The signs use the Helvetica font (actually, a derivative).

just go in the exterior file of a train and paste a route number/letter on the Front of the train picture. its the same as editing familt pictures and stuff just in a different location.

You do not press 9 or 8 or 0, you have to drag an image of your chosen rollsign into Paint and position it. I recommend you use Paint.NET though, and position it using the "Move Selected Pixels" tool

I'm pasting the 1 route sign over the 7. then WALAH its a (1) train. it takes a little effort to change route signs like this but its easy when you get the hang of it. Like  SubwayTrainOperator  said use Paint.NET, the only reason i use GIMP is because its simple for me, Ive been using it 2 years now so I DONT recommend GIMP.

This can be pretty easily done in Paint... just drag the rollsign over the original 7 logo and there you go... but it probably won't look too realistic

They usually come in some of our object folders. There are some BMT/IND rollsigns in the 6thAve folder (Which comes with the old (D) Line), and you can also use the ones in the avatar selection gallery here on the forum. (When you go to edit your profile)
