The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
« on: December 23, 2011, 09:24:22 am »
Hi, have seen The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (a new version with John Travolta)? I'm sure you are right subway fans, so you did. What did you say about it? I was sorry for killing the engineer. Why every time must die engineer (Under Siege II, for example, and many other movies)...

Well that was part of the story- they kill the motorman so then they can hijack the train.

Pelham 123 is a good movie but too much talking (and horrendously inaccurate in terms of the technicalities)..I still liked Speed better lol

That was the 3rd version of the movie. For true subway fans it was disappointing with all the technical errors.

The 2nd version was filmed in Toronto with TTC cars. IMO everyone involved with that movie should be incarcerated.

The 1st was the best one since it was very true to the book which was written in 1973 and the movie filmed in 1974.

Well, what I remember from NYCTF is that they're not doing it for the transit fans. They're not aiming for near-100% accuracy despite the fact that the MTA aims to make it as close to the real thing as possible. That's why you have the R160 (2) train and the R68 (M) train. Also, they chose the R62A because some of the R62A fleet are single cars, while the R142A are all married 5-car sets. I'm guessing it's for convenience. There's probably more to this, but I don't remember.

The 6 doesn't go to Coney Island, just like it didn't go to South Ferry in 1974 (I think). The train going to Coney Island is just part of their plan.

Is there a real train that leaves Pelham Bay Park at 1:23?

Nope. Assigning a train the call letters of 123 has been avoided by a lot of dispatchers.

Why cudnt they jus do it right?

Most films won't show something to correct detail, probably a safety precaution.

For example, in Die Hard 3, where the dump trucks were to be on the FDR, in some scenes they show the trucks on the BQE instead.  Also the part where Mc Clain jumps the side of the highway, it was also on the BQE.  That whole scene was made to be the FDR though.

The 6 could go to South Ferry via the shuttle tracks after Bowling Green. That made the 1970s film more realistic in a sense

Exactly. I think the 5 terminated I SF in the early 70's or 60's.

Interesting reading... I loved Denzel Washington as dispatcher. You are right - too much talking there... But we have more movies with subways. Speed (not exactly about subway, only last scene and it was i LA if I'm right), Die Hard 3 or great The French Connection (car/subway chase scene).
