Yep, this is true. I verified the info the same way Mr. Railfan said (Planned Service Changes - 10/3) the moment this topic came up on NYC Transit Forums.

It'll be nice to have something like this finally come back

Yeah, I've missed that damn express service, it'll definitely cut 10-15 minutes off my commute in the morning.
-
Nevertheless, it's still not the same without the R40 Slants, R40Ms, and CI R42s on the line.

Couldn't agree More

I mean I guess I'm not that much of a die-hard buff, it wouldn't really affect me.

I'd miss them because I hardly rode on them on the Brighton Line or on any line on particular, but I'd prefer the R68As on the Brighton express (R68s second :P).

I rode the Brighton Line Express daily until I was around 6 years old so it holds a special place in my childhood memories.
There was nothing better than standing at the point of the huge R40 Slant picture window as you rocketed through Cortelyou Road...
Nowadays with the R68As it just isn't the same, there isn't that feel you got on the R40 Slants that you just knew meant that you were going down to Brighton Beach.
-
As of today, I've been a Brighton rider for 23 years and a couple of days. I guess yeah the rail fan window was a blast indeed, but for me I guess times changed majority of my interest has went to automotive but I do have that sweet heart spot for my transit. I'm trying to just say that I don't get that broken heart type of feeling if I don't see a R40 rolling down Brighton. Best way for me to explain it.

I was very young when I was riding the R40 Slants daily, so it was a very different dynamic for me. Literally the first thing I really encountered in my life as something that I called "fun" was that big window up in the front. My earliest childhood memories come from that piece of glass they slapped on the storm door.
Those daily rides down to Brighton Beach were quite literally everything and the only thing I looked forward to back in those days.
For some people, they had their stuffed bear or blanket that they carried everywhere and absolutely adored, for me it was that window.
So when they retired the R40 Slants, it was almost as if that childhood object that you always had with you was simply destroyed.
