Title: Joint LIRR and MNRR M9 / M9A procurement information

This is what I found today on the MTA's website:

Long Island Rail Road, on behalf of itself and MetroNorth Commuter Railroad, will shortly issue two simultaneous Request for Proposals for the design, manufacture, test and delivery of up to 676 M-9 and 160 M-9A commuter railcars. Contract award is expected to be made in the 4th Quarter of 2012 with delivery of the first pilot cars for testing expected in the 2nd quarter of 2016.

Damn, that is a long time from now. Did they at least have a sketch?

Well, from the documentation, they're still working out the final design specs. But if I didn't read anything incorrectly, I believe they're looking to make them inter-operable with the M7s. So don't expect anything radically different from what we have now.
