Title: Wi-Fi on buses
Post by: Pacific385 on May 30, 2012, 06:24:32 pm
Today, I was on New Flyer C40LF (the new one) #260 when i randomly decided to search up Wi-Fi networks on my Blackberry. To my surprise one of the networks that came up was
MTA-260
In addition, 251 was in front of us and there was a network called MTA-251. I'm wondering why would the mta put wifi on the bus?
(btw, the connection was "wep" iirc)

probably the luminators use some sort of wireless OTA update or something to update on the fly.

Oh yeah, all of the new C40LF's have cameras so they have this wireless for that purpose.

I noticed that there was only 1 camera and that was like the one the +SBS has to make sure no one is blocking the bus lanes

All the 2xx's in Gleason have the camera's. The 3xx's don't have them yet. Some of Spring Screek's units have camera's too. I know 505 and 520 have them.

Every bus with security cameras equipped has the wifi. As said it is there so they can download the footage from the security cameras. There is no internet connection AFAIK. The network will not allow mobile devices to connect even with the correct password.

The buses that have security cameras that I know of are the RTS & Hybrids at Flatbush, the old new C40s (100/200 series) from Gleason & College Point, and the 1200 series LFSA from 126 and Gun Hill.

At least one of LaGuardia's RTSes have the cameras as well.

most of the buses front white camera is for the driving camera and the ones in the bus is for watching the passengers that's one reasons for the locked WiFi  another is for maintenance.
