R1-Vintage Trains-What is the best spot to wait at, at 2nd Avenue?

“Nostalgia Shoppers’ Special Train” is running again!

You can catch a ride on these classic R1/9 subway cars at stations along the weekday M line between Queens Plaza and 2 Av.  You can board the train at these stations:

• Court Sq-23 St
• Lexington Av/53 St
• 5 Av/53 St
• 47-50 Sts/Rockefeller Center
• 42 St Bryant Park   
• 34 St Herald Sq
• 23 St (6 Av)
• 14 St (6 Av)
• W 4 St Wash Sq
• B’way-Lafayette St
• 2 Av (F line)

Departures from 2nd Avenue are at
9:58 AM, 11:27 AM, 12:57 PM, 2:27 PM, and 3:57 PM.

Departures from Queens Plaza are at
10:43 AM, 12:13 PM, 1:42 PM, 3:13 PM, and 4:43 PM.

Me neither lol. I'll be on the 12:57 or 2:27 out of 2nd Avenue. But what stop marker should I wait by?

It's an 8 car train, so it stops at the 8 marker. Don't expect to be able to get in the train using the first set of doors, as the RFW is literally mobbed with foamers.

Don't bother trying to get the RFW - you won't get it. Back of the train's your best bet.

I'll be at Second Avenue. It'll probably be packed on the platform but I think ill get pretty close. Do they bring it into the lay-up then bring it back to the other track or just reverse it from the platform?

At Queens Plaza they use the relay track just north of the station..at Queens Plaza you will have to get off the train and go wait for it on the Manhattan bound platform.

At 2nd Ave the train sits on the old V train tracks on the uptown platform.

So at Second avenue the train switches into the uptown track and then the T/O walks to the front? I'll be there at the 8 car marker.

Is it better to get on at Broadway Laffayette, at the back and wait till it gets to Second Avenue?

It's a double ended train run. There are two motormen. However, the train won't always make the 8 car marker. Those things are hard to stop.

LOL on bve they are... the motormen that were in charge of the train on the 17th were pretty fine tuned with their stopping. And yea, about the railfan window. It's bound to be packed on the 24th, and I was lucky to get two runs where i could be right up against it. Your best bet to catch the railfan window is to wait at the 8 car marker of either 2nd avenue or Queens plaza, and make sure you're there well before the train is expected to pull in. that way, you're the first one on board. Also, they do give priority to children at the railfan window, so be courteous. Here's my railfan video that i posted elsewhere; it should give you an idea of what to expect...

Riding New York City Subway R6 1000 (Full Route) From Queens Plaza to 2nd Avenue

The entire trip is scheduled to take approximately 30 minutes, so if you are wondering when trains are scheduled to arrive at a certain terminal, look at the departure schedule and add 30 minutes onto any departure time, and that will give you the arrival time for the opposite terminal. For example, the 12:57 departure from 2nd Avenue will arrive at Queens plaza by 1:30. Then it will depart Queens plaza at 1:42, arriving back at second avenue at around 2:10.

The train remains at the platform at 2nd avenue when reversing, but it has to switch sides at Queens plaza, so when you get off on the Queens end, you have to walk up the stairs to the opposite platform and wait for it to pull in.
