There are buffs aka railfanners who purposely fan at night to avoid the attention in the day time and because more interesting things are happening such as car moves, work trains and stuff.
But if you're going out for announcements I'm sure 9/10 those few railfanners who go out at night will have them recorded and on youtube.
Also on a school night is it really worth recording or photographing a TRAIN than being home already in bed or near to being in bed safe and knowing that there is SCHOOL the next day.
I'm pretty much with you. Railfanning is a mere hobby for me and it's been diminishing on me with every year I grow. I just can't take the time out of my life to go out railfanning anymore, even at night at that. On the SCHOOL note, I can't see how parents would let anyone under 18 just go out at night to record things; alone if that was the case as well. I said under 18 as well because I'm sure 80% of this forum is under 80%.
If I were to broaden the ages of railfanning then anyone over 18 I'd assume you're in college or in a working field and the times you are free can be flexible.
I personally wouldn't go out at night to railfan some extraordinary GO. My schedule is too complex for such a feat unless I'm on break and sick leave from work at the same time, and I have nothing else better to do.
