Post by: Pacific385 on August 28, 2012, 02:40:25 pm
The AutoTram Extra Grand which comes in at 98 feet has been unveiled in Dresden, Germany. It can fit up to 256 people.

Taking articulated buses to the next level.
Looks interesting & convenient on how you can fit 200+ people. It could take out all the people waiting on a bus stop when a bus is delayed and no one will have to wait for another bus.

would be sick if MTA or any North American bus companies would have this bad boy

I doubt we would ever get that we'd have more accidents with that due to New yorkers who cant drive  ::) ::)

I don't really think it would be because of that. Some depots may not be able to maintain/store the bus because its so long.

Anyway, it must be a real headache driving that thing.

Try taking that thing around any tight corner in manhattan, wouldn't be easy. The driver would probably think:
"Oh crap, a corner" then turns reluctantly
"oh,oh,oh thank god I made it" While the last section is still turning then hears something
"CRAP! What the hell happen?!" Somebody comes knocking on the bus and tells the driver that he took out a whole traffic light
"S*it"

After coming back from a vacation that includes a stopover in Zurich, Switzerland, I found it absolutely amazing how far behind NYC is from Europe technologically. I would be willing to bet that something like this, let alone a bi-articulated bus in general, will not end up here for a long time.

Don't you think driving a regular articulated bus is a pain itself, driving the one in the article makes it even worse. lol

The article states how the rear section of the bus steers itself to avoid that issue.
I see what you were talking about, I saw the part you were talking about, but didn't think much of it

Even more surprising, the AutoTram can be driven by any bus driver; no special license is required. The bus got the green light because of a special train-like steering algorithm that ensures the two rear sections, which rest on four guided axles, perfectly follow the cab.

I would think this sort of bus would only be feasible if there were very strictly enforced bus lanes.  Buses these long should have their own dedicated lane that should be separated in order for it to be effective.

I can't see this work out at all in Manhattan, maybe suburban Queens and only there.  This would be a nightmare for turns and traffic conditions in NY already.
