Now this is equipment! I like the way this is coming out so far, NYZ3R0DAY.

I have one question. How do you achieve such a smooth framerate with your video capture? What program do you use? Better yet, what codec do you use? I've been trying to get that sort of quality on my videos for the longest time now. lol

Anyway, enough questions. I'll let you develop. This project shows a lot of promise to it. I'm a little biased of course because I've always had an affinity toward SMEE equipment but, quality-wise, its great. Keep up the good work.

I actually use FRAPS for this. The video card in my system is a 1GB PCIe NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT. I have it recording at the highest settings the video card allows me.

And here we go - the WABCO compressor sounds.
(managed to get permission for the video source of the WABCO compressor, along with combining my own source of the WABCO compressor)

you also get to see a bit of the prototype interior, which will change once i get interior shots from the R16 that's in the transit museum.

Features Implemented:

Marker Lights:
0 - Marker lights will toggle to appropriate marker with route! For example, toggling to the A rollsign will light up the EXP marker, and AA rollsign will light up the LCL marker

This train DOES have animated rollsigns as a result from being rebuilt from the OpenBVE R38, so the same keys used to toggle the signs from the R38 are the same for the R16

Here's a demonstration of the nearly complete marker lights. Still needs some adjustments:

I will be posting the open source components i have added into the R-16 as separate threads, as an effort to reduce PMs whenever i release the R-16.

Also, It was the movie The Warriors that actually inspired me for the R-16's sneak-peek trailers. I loved how they presented the trains on the film. And also since it's using the 1970's MTA Silver/Blue scheme, it is also age-appropiate for its time!

As a result, the theme song from the warriors (including the Baseball Furies chase theme) will be the OFFICIAL R16 theme song for all trailers!

Just wondering, for those who took the NY subway in the 1970's-1980's, were the route side rollsigns also illuminated or just the current side destination signs?

Judging from how you act (and the fact that you spelled "BETA" wrong), I doubt you even know what BETA testing is. BETA testing is NOT for obtaining content early.
It is for helping developers pinpoint bugs that they wouldn't notice because the content would be used in a setting other than that of the developers'.

On a separate note, the R16 definitely needs a new loop sound (as the R38's loop sound is the A/C, something the R16s don't have) along with a bunch of other sound changes that make the train sound like a true WABCO SMEE instead of an train with an RT-2 braking system, Westcode, or an NYAB system.
Next chance you can, see if you can get some sounds off a running R12, R15, R17, R21, or R22 (either the Transit Museum, Shoreline Trolley Museum, or Seashore Trolley Museum)

Before:

The horn is NOT final. But NEW loop sound as well!
The R16 (Trailer 6) - Exterior fix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgXDmeMdWwE#ws)

i would love to bata test it for u plez ;D ;D

I don't think so.

Yeah. the loop sound is just temporary until i can find the axial fan sound.
Finally got a new loop sound!

The strange compressor sound is a result of mixing two tracks of the same WABCO compressor, since it plays two sound files at the same time. I was experimenting with the sounds to see if there is a way so the "muffled" version would be more audible when the camera is further away, and the proper sound would have the volume increased as the camera got closer to the train. As a result, as i acquired permission from the owner of the WABCO video, i may just leave that sound in there, so the true WABCO compressor is heard, but may do a minor edit for identification reasons.

To give you an idea of what i was talking about, in the beginning of "Stations of the elevated", you can hear the WABCO compressors running from the SMEE trains at the beginning, which is also the secondary source i got the other WABCO sounds from:
Elevated Stations NYC 1980 pt1 of 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy6XRZBtPAg#)

Some more placeholder images and the new floor (still need to adjust the tile size so they are all squares)

placeholder roof and ads, lights are now in their proper positions:

Looking great! :) But do not forget that the walls on either side of the doors on the R16 (where the ads are) slant inward a bit, like in this picture: http://www.orenstransitpage.com/otpnycpics/r16int.jpg (http://www.orenstransitpage.com/otpnycpics/r16int.jpg)

Unless of course you are making the version with the non-slanted interior walls, it would be nice to have them in

So far, i'm hoping to get the interior of the non-slanted version finished before i continue on to make the slanted version.

Also, i'm trying to find out if there is such thing as a trigger to illuminate objects besides EmissiveColor, this is needed for the northbound and southbound destination rollsigns:

See how this R-16 has "Continental Ave" lit up on the rollsign?

Man, you are just on a roll with this project  ;D Excellent job. But try to make everything a bit less "cartoon-like", perhaps by adding a little texture to the walls, etc, and try making the black edges of the door panels less thick, too. But great job.

Haha yeah, the black edges are actually outlines so i know where i was placing them.

I'm still waiting for a right time to visit the transit museum to finally get photos of the R16's interior to begin replacement of the placeholder interior.

The R16 for OpenBVE (Trailer 7) - 3rd Rail Gap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJTY8N3lq-s#ws)

Third rail GAP POWER LOSS AT LAST! Though i wish it would work for individual cars (it works but does it for the entire train instead of each individual car). However, i have yet to implement it on the doors and rollsigns, as it requires two of each object.

Currently working on the functionality for the R-16 and Mr Railfan's R30 (which will also have the 3rd rail gap power loss implemented as well), before i resume with the interior details.

Thats awesome though but why are you testing in the LUL.I remember running a NYCT train on their and its the route itself that has the coding for arching in places(not saying the train couldn't had possibly had coding) features. As far as the interior lighting the 1995 LU Stock once it loses power (arching) the train goes dark briefly(1 sec or less).

REVISED sneak-peek, so you can see more of this 3rd rail gap feature on the train:
The R16 for OpenBVE (Trailer 7 REVISED) - 3rd Rail Gap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3ldZeCwWiQ#ws)

For the train itself to take advantage of this, the code basically swaps the emissive train objects for non-emissive train objects once it crosses a 3rd rail gap, hence, the code must be placed in the .animated files, specifying first a non-emissive object, and the second, an emissive object (for the interior lighting effect). This is what the R16 has implemented, followed by Mr Railfan's R30.

For this to work, it depends on the route having the coding for the 3rd rail gap, since it triggers that ATS state (which is 53). Otherwise, the train will always appear lit.

You can see how it's coded from the train end on this thread:

Sorry to post in the wrong spot, but doesn't Mr.Railfan's Version 2 of the R27/R30 Redbird on the other website, have a vey high accleration rate/speed?

it does, actually!

Understandable now,how easy hard would it be to implement this to the current and future NYCT routes/trains?

In a nutshell, it just depends if the train has an exterior/interior view. On your extensions.cfg, an .animated file MUST BE SPECIFIED for the number of cars the train has.

To implement this on current and future trains, you will need two exterior/interior objects PER car (one without emissivecolor, one with emissivecolor)

well good luck with that . They ALWAYS lock the doors to the cabs as to keep unwanted intruders and kids out. I mean after all , it is subway equipment and it may be used in the future on fan trips and the cab is a vital aspect of that.

Your best chance to get a cab pic is when they change the Light cycle on the florescent light bulbs so that one side of the bulb lights up brighter then the other. They change it once a week . Thats how i got the r33wf cabs and r30 cab pics .

Your best chance to get a cab pic is when they change the Light cycle on the florescent light bulbs so that one side of the bulb lights up brighter then the other. They change it once a week . Thats how i got the r33wf cabs and r30 cab pics .

Ah. if only i knew which day of the week they do this.

Some more visual eye candy. once again, using the London Underground District route so i can make sure the R-16 would be future-proof (meaning it's ready for future NYCTA OpenBVE routes)

Let there be headlights!

They will also do the same effect as the interior lighting when crossing a 3rd rail gap:

The headlight beam's visibility varies, depending on the brightness settings on the route itself (meaning when it's darker, the beams are more visible, and when it's brighter, the beams are less visible), for more realistic headlights

Some interior work done. Adding the door panel bulges to the right side as well. Also the basic template for the ceiling (the fans will be smaller so it would be as close as the real thing.Might be a 3D diffuser grille instead of a flat one.

Also, adding an authentic 1972 MTA system map, in full resolution.

The horn is NOT final. But NEW loop sound as well!
The R16 (Trailer 6) - Exterior fix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgXDmeMdWwE#ws)

i would love to bata test it for u plez ;D ;D

I don't think so.

Yeah. the loop sound is just temporary until i can find the axial fan sound.

Your name is in the list of contributors. Same applies for everyone else who contributes. Your textures have been used for the basis for the interior walls, if you didn't notice.

You will see this list in the train.txt file when it's released (hopefully soon)

im currently working on a train in developement, can you lend me a hand in telling me how you corrected the face lol? i mean what did you do in the coding

The bulkhead uses a separate texture and mesh. Use the first 12 vertices within the code for the ends, and change the height (Y axis) to where the bulkhead should normally be.

Individual advertisements are being worked on. All advertisements will be authentic advertisements from the 1970s. I am trying as hard to keep the ads accurate from 1970-1973 (some ads may be used that are newer than 1973, but still, they're ads from the 1970s), due to the system map being used being an authentic 1972 map.

As previously mentioned, each car will have its own individual advertisements

I am looking for good quality scans for vintage advertisements that were used in subway cars (minimum should be 400 x 400 size). Time period should be around 1970-1973, but some newer ones up to 1979 will still be accepted.

I will also be glad if you have any authentic MTA advertisements between 1970 and 1973!

If anyone has the ads, and are able to scan them, PLEASE SUBMIT THEM VIA THE CONTENT CONTRIBUTOR! I have made a request there.

Also, does anyone know the font used for the number plates? this is what i'm talking about:

It is a custom font used by NYCT. You can find it online, it is called the "independent" font by the person who made it. Search around on google for it.

4 key toggles the side rollsign lamp to illuminate the NB or SB destination sign

5 key turns on or off the headlights

6 key turns on of off the interior lighting

7 key switches the marker light between local and express!

This one is in the MTA Silver/Blue livery as of now.

However, should i create one in the original livery, and later on, the 1960s paint scheme, it will have the original BMT signage and the pre-1967 signage.

This version has the 1967-1978 signage.

I think you should do the curved roof and stop there, make a copy and then resume work. Reason is because then you'd have a low quality and high quality version, then people with really low grade computers could enjoy this and people with really super computers could also. with the high quality versions. from what ive seen 3d really kills older computers. just my opinion but it would be nice for others (excluding me)   ;D

The quality of release will always depend on the creator.  Sooner or later people will have to upgrade their computers.  You don't see power house games releasing a lower quality version of it's game.

But still i believe the majority of the poeple here dont have a Power house gaming machine that can support stuff with 35,000+ poly objects . I am running a 2009 HP labtop that probably cant handle these new releases with the super high poly count in the 3d objects. I also dont have enough money to update to a more modern computer as is the situation with alot of people here , so im in support of the Low Res version and a high res carsion of the train so that we can support everyone (Unless your running windows 98 :P)

The seats of the R-16 is not flat like the R30 and newer cars. They are partially rounded which adds some difficulty. This is what makes it difficult for a legacy version but i will try however. Cannot guarantee this though.

Bluntly speaking, majority of the people here are still kids.  Not trying to be rude or anything but mainly the reason not many people here have a decent machine.

I honestly didn't upgrade my rig to support newer things until I was 19 and saved enough money to take charge for myself.

As a result of demand, i am making two versions of this train.

There will be a high quality version complete with 3D seats, poles, and yes, 3D pivoting trucks WITH animated tripcocks and a detailed underbody.

The lower quality version will have the basic seating, 2D poles, and the basic trucks with animated wheels.

Both will feature curved roofs.

PLEASE DO CONTRIBUTE, AND I MAY OFFER A CONTRIBUTOR BETA SOON!
(That is, after the R16 goes past the Developer Alpha stages and the Developer Beta stages.)

Train percentage: 67% as the seats are nearly done.  Cheers to Rikabs for his hard work on the seats.

im just encouraging others to help developers by contributing. It really helps us from a single texture, up to a full blown object.

So yeah, just to maintain compatibility for now, i have split the project in two, so that the lesser fortunate players still get a taste of R16 and the exterior, and those with higher spec systems can enjoy a high resolution, photorealistic R16.

I'm putting as much effort as i can, so everyone can enjoy this train as much as i would want to enjoy it.

Model is now properly BMT/IND width.

Still in the works...seats pending, so is the curved roof...

Also waiting for a source to send me the cab view and a new front end texture. Pantograph gates will be replaced with photorealistic ones.

Finally, we got a new front end!

Many thanks to B4ucmenow

Additionally, i reverse engineered the code within the  Alstom Metropolis train (it's creative commons, share-alike), now got the rollsigns to scroll after much trial and error.

If someone knows how to bind the 2 and 1 key to the Oskari plugin, that would be great! That way i can make the front rollsign a separate key, and to make the changeable destination light system

The two lights next to the rollsign area, right before the marker lights, is what i'm talking about. As far as i know, these lights would have different color lenses to reflect it's destination, unlike later on when it was just red

For now, both of these little lights are set to red, like this train has, until further notice:

This train is absolutely gorgeous!! I can't wait for it to be released. I just wanted to point out one thing though. When you do the realistic pantograph gates between the cars, they need to be adjusted. If you look at the front of the texture you used for the train, it shows you exactly where the gates should be placed and how long they should be in terms of height. Right now, the gates are not placed correctly or high enough. Other than that, this train is coming along excellently. Keep up the great work!!!!  ;)

Just for the record, all R10-R68A cars use the same Cast Truck Design.
BeeRyDavis has a point though. The trucks from the R16 to the R42 have these parts that distinguish them from later cars. When the R62s/R62As and the 75-footers came, those parts weren't present on their trucks.

Which parts? just wondering.
(to those wondering, these are actually the R46 trucks, was testing them out to see how it would fit the R16. The actual trucks for the R16 will be added later on, as well as the underbody.)

DJ is right the R-10 thru R-68A series have the same trucks there may have been modifications for smoother rides in the past decade or so but very little differences. The R-46 trucks or SMEE trucks on the R-16 is fine but for more realism they can use some weathering textures so the blue springs coils are not noticeable: as an SMS

The cross seats are here! Thanks to rikabs for his efforts!
(now the longitude seats are pending...)

Also due to a major contradiction between the NY Transit Museum's R16 and the Kingston Trolley Museum of NY's R16 regarding the floor, both floor types will be included

Trolley Museum Of NY Floor Layout (this also happens to be the original floor layout, according to various interior pics in nycsubway.org)

New York Transit Museum Floor Layout
(http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/5428/objectviewer20120401032.png)

Now to resume fixing up the interior  so it is adjusted to the proper BMT size width (it had the old IRT size width)

Probably may be the first and last high resolution NYCTA OpenBVE train of it's kind. Not many people are ready for higher resolutions (and it's file size)..

The major advantage of higher resolutions shows in rounded objects, such as the door windows, rollsign boxes, and in the case of my R16, the porthole storm door windows.

Well those who are able to run it, good for you.

In other words, just a few screenshots. Working on the interior textures as of now.

Notice how they are more rounded?

Again, the RFW view:

Slow process of the photorealistic textures and other major adjustments.

The low res version in the meantime will be on hold until the high res version is nearly done.

Can't really do much about the cab view. Still is a challenge to try to get a cab shot...

Until i can get a shot of the proper R16 cab, or if someone has one, i can't really do much about the cab.

It is now properly identified as a Westinghouse propulsion car. So if you want to change the car number using the template, make sure it starts with 63, then you got the range from 00 to 99.

Apparently, some or all older subway cars had a sticker near the cab window, which would either sport a W or a G, presumably Westinghouse or General Electric, respectively.

(that little blue line you see is from the grid view that i have enabled to better place the objects)

And in real life, here's an R12 with the G sticker:

and an R11 with the W sticker:

Based on the datasheets and etc, the usage of the W and G stickers seem to be used to mark whether the car is a Westinghouse or G.E propulsion.

After experimenting with the FLAC audio format, i have decided to convert all (except motor0 to motor7) the existing .wav files into the .flac sound format. the latest version of OpenBVE has support for .flac sound files, and it has a very high compression rate, yet loss-less audio!

Have a look at the difference:

This looks amazing!

My fault if this has been asked before, but will there be a low poly version? My definition of low poly is just subbing the animated wheels with static ones.

Working on the lights...made the proper rounded lights on sketchup. just need to resize them with the ceiling template.

Ceiling texture appears distorted but will remain until lights are in their proper locations, then ceiling texture will be redone.

Still browsing for proper 1970's ads..hence the white space. Each car has it's own set of advertisements except the ceiling ones.

..now to work on the ceiling, the ceiling ad panes, the poles and the center lights.

now that i optimized the textures, i got an FPS gain on the franklin shuttle from 13 to 30 fps

Well, they are singles, so of course you can run them as a single car.

And the emergency brake valve is being worked on, as that will be animated (swinging realistically as much as possible) as well as necessary builder plate info and etc.

About animations & the shorter trains:

I found that animations move unrealistically faster when the train is shorter, does the same thing happen with the R16?

Probably casue of the higher fps due to less objects need to load up, look at chris's screenshot, 123 fps...thats some crazy stuff right there :)

Loving the train, but is there a way to disable the handrail animation? I think that's the cause of my poor framerates. I can hit 25 with the 46, but with the 16, its a consistent 15.

Other than that, amazing piece of work!

it's actually the trucks that cause much of the lag since the trucks are from the R46. I'm working on a dumbed down version of the trucks.

The R16 finally has a home route for openBVE.

Many thanks to TJay for granting me permission to update and optimize the route. As you see, Franklin Av station is a WIP (hence the recycled dean street windscreen object), and if anyone can provide a blueprint of the station layout as it was before being rebuilt, i would kindly appreciate it. Otherwise, it will be based on the numerous photos available.

What's been updated:
-Generic signals from the BVE 2/4 days upgraded with his newer signals
-Beacon that WILL trip your train on a red signal (Oskari Plugin & Default ATS plugin)
-Speed Limits
-Some texture swaps
-In-Cab Rain (supported cabs with the Oskari plugin)
-Third Rail Gaps (supported trains with the Oskari plugin)
-Static trains upgraded to moving trains with interiors.
-Background noise to make the scenario more realistic

Expect another major public evaluation release of the R16 soon, which includes some texture updates.

You mean have a version of this train with only one headlight on one side of the front, instead of two headlights?

For those who prefer the BVEStation Download, it has also been updated to match the current version released on my page as well.

http://www.bvestation.com/downloadinfo.php?id=101 (http://www.bvestation.com/downloadinfo.php?id=101)

Here's some suggested system requirements that i listed:

HQ Version:

Minimum:
2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Equivalent
2GB available RAM
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT or better

Recommended:
2GHz Intel Core i3 or AMD Equivalent
4 GB available RAM
256MB Intel HD Graphics Series (Including the Iris & Iris Pro series), NVIDIA GeForce 3xx Series Graphics, AMD Radeon HD 4670

LQ Version:
1.83GHz Intel Core Duo or AMD Equivalent
1 GB available RAM
128MB Intel GMA X3100

Now here's a little challenge i have for you guys:

Anyone who can get their best screenshots and/or videos showcasing the train can get their screenshots/videos featured on the R16 download page! You can post up to 20 screenshots or videos combined per post. One entry per poster. You can always update your existing post with better screenshots or videos. Contest Ends on 12/31/13 and winners will be announced.

Just some update progress...

No more dark bulkhead syndrome at the wrong ends:

Rebuilt the interior ceiling for accuracy reasons. Also note some changed advertisements:

Some sounds were changed to match that of R-16 6387 when it ran that day (i attended the trip, it was well worth the $50).

Mudwrestle will take care of the olive drab NYTM R16, and the pre-1975 version which is the version before the R16's got the R44 door motors (notable due to sloping door panels, before that, it didn't have those sloping door panels).
