Title: Something odd about the R46s
Post by: Smooth23 on May 24, 2011, 12:12:01 am
Ok so I have been taking the R46s on the R to work and I been noticing it has a whirling motor lately and I find it quite strange because it doesn't have a Westinghouse motor. It has a Pullman motor. Its so strange it was # 5741

Nothing special some R-46's howl just like some 68A's.That can be b\c:
1.Different motor
2.Bad bearings meaning the axel or axial and the truck meet(friction) to create that sound.
IND QBL: Ride on R46 (R) #5741 with HOWLING MOTOR from 36 St-Roosevelt AV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxTeruHihc4#) (Not my vid)

That's the same exact train I took lol and it's kinda strange though cuss you would mostly hear the howling motors on the R68s/As & R44s but not at all from the R46

I have to agree, that's pretty awkward. The owner of the video sums it up - he/she said that most R46s don't have this.

the motor is dying lol
By the way, I was wondering - what are the mechanics' options when a motor is dying?

Usually when a motor of a train dies It howls I believe.
I took the same (R) train a few months back and it had the same issue maybe Jamaica yard is lacking maintance or crews or something.

Well Jamaica is a shit yard at maintenance which is why the 160's look bad over there.I doubt they'll have a train running for months with a dead motor so I doubt its a dead motor.

R46s have GE motors.

Also the howling sound comes from the friction created by an old or under-lubricated wheel bearing, not from the motor. Notice that even when the train is coasting, the howling sound is present.
