Other Games / Mini Metro
« on: March 02, 2014, 10:48:37 pm »
While surfing the internet, I happen to come across this simple but rather addictive game called Mini Metro.  Don't let the simple graphics fool you!  Its a game where you simply connect "stations" to create "lines".  Create them well, and you'll have a system that works and doesn't get overcrowded.

I'll be waiting to see what the full version of the game brings.  :D

Station Talk / Event/Calendar + Long Term Station Renovation
« on: December 18, 2013, 12:47:09 am »
In case you haven't noticed, we recently did an update to the forum system, and accidentally overwritten our old theme.  Unfortunately, we wont be getting that back anytime soon.  The good news is, this marks the groundbreaking for the next iteration of the BVEStation website.  Rest assured what you are seeing with the splash of whiteness wont be around forever (if you don't like it).  Stay tuned.

For users who like Teamspeak Events, we now allow all users to setup an event in the Calendar section of the forum.  Under Calendar, Post Event, create a title and a date of when it is occurring.  Once created, it will automatically be posted in the Calendar, in addition to the Teamspeak section.

General BVE/OpenBVE / Github Familiarity
« on: October 18, 2013, 12:29:34 am »
Hey guys, I am wondering what is everyone's familiarity with Github or Git in general, the software versioning system (which is widely used in many software projects).  I would like to run a new fully collaborative way to develop routes.  Any developer who wishes can pull the code, make their modifications, then push it back to the server for everyone to have their copy updated.  Eventually when we deem the route is good enough for a release, we will package it and allow users to download it, all while still leaving development open for anyone who still wants to make add-ons, eventually creating newer versions as we go.

If anyone is looking for motivation, I want to complete the LIRR Atlantic Ave - Jamaica route that I was once working on back in 2011, and would love it if other route devs can collectively work on it.  I think putting it on Github will make it accessible and easy to foster this collaboration, in addition to quieting people who are wondering what progress is on a specific route.

Route progress - Everybody can see the progress themselves (just download the latest copy from github)
Open Source - Anybody and everybody can contribute (There will be one main copy which will combine the works of everyone)
Faster development - More people can work on routes faster, and easier

Let me know what you guys think, and whether or not you would be interested in developing this route and attempting this new paradigm.

Station Talk / MTA Endorses BVEStation for Arts For Transit
« on: April 01, 2013, 05:10:15 pm »
The MTA has taken notice of the work that occurs at BVEStation and its associated works.  The MTA has decided that the work on BVEStation would best be showcased in the MTA's Arts For Transit program.  MTA Arts for Transit commissions artists through a competitive selection process to create original, site-specific permanent artwork for rehabilitated stations and have selected some of the content featured on BVEStation for showcasing at the Transit Museum.

"We are pleased to showcase the wonderful work happening at BVEStation to the public, the works created at BVEStation provides an opportunity for the public to enjoy the subway system and its history in a more fun and interactive way" said MTA Arts for Transit Spokeperson Susan Portland.

The museum will be showcasing the museum exhibits of the works of BVEStation, from April 1st to April 2nd.

Virtual Reality Train Simulators

Brooklyn, April 1st to April 2nd.

The BVE Trainsim has gotten popularity in the London Transit Museums, the transit museum will be showcasing the BVE Trainsim with content for New York City, just like the London Transit Museums.  Patrons will be able to interact with a train simulator, taking on the role of a New York City Subway operator, featuring popular lines, like the A, or the 7.  Patrons will also learn the development of the subway system through small snippets of information that will flash on the screen as patrons pass by stations in the simulator.

Train Showcase

Brooklyn, April 1st to June 30th.

Virtual 3d models of prototype trains, and trains that are never built can now be experienced with a fully immersive motion simulator.  Patrons will experience realistic sounds, and feelings from the simulator.  Prototype trains include the R10, futuristic trains, like the R211 and service/maintenance trains.

Happy April Fools Day!

BVEStation Network News / Making All Stops : Volume One
« on: July 10, 2012, 04:17:31 pm »
Hey guys, today we have a treat for everyone.  We have partnered with MakingAllStops.com and they are selling their latest book, Making All Stops, NYC Subway Photography Volume One, From 1970 to 1976.  I have written a review for you all to read, cause there really is a difference in holding a set of photos in your hand, as opposed to seeing them on a screen.  All this can be found on the BVEStation Homepage.  The book has over 200 photos, in 120 pages, with no more than 3 photos per page.   The book is 8 x 1/2 x 11 all in a smooth glossy finish.  The review can be read at the following link.  http://www.bvestation.com/makingallstops.php

After asking around, a lot of people are also interested in Volume Two of the book which shows photos from 1977 to 1989.  Volume Two will be on sale soon, but they need to generate enough interest with Volume One first.

With that said, there's more!  BVEStation is also partnering with Making All Stops to giveaway free copies of Volume One for BVEStation Members.  For the month of July, we will select one lucky BVEStation Member based on a random lottery to win a free copy of Making All Stops, Volume One.  To apply you need to purchase a contest ticket in the Forum Shop for 25 Tokens.  You will then need to use the ticket, and enter the information asked of you.  To earn tokens, you need to be an active member of the BVEStation Community, and making posts in the forum will generate tokens.  More tickets will increase your chances of winning but will not guarantee you a win.  Please do not go spamming, and make sure your posts conform to the rules.  If you refer a member to BVEStation, and that new member makes a post in the Introductions section saying you referred them, you will also earn 200 Tokens, please let me know if you do this.  Please read the contest rules for more details before applying, at http://www.bvestation.com/contestRules.php  Good Luck!

Also, please do share this book/contest with others.  If you do get the book, let us know what you think about it!  :D

Any questions regarding the book, or the contest, please feel free to ask.

Station Talk / Site Updates: 6/28
« on: June 28, 2012, 07:45:02 pm »
Just a quick update,

The F v4.51 and the R160 has been uploaded on the station.

BVEStation Public FTP is now open to everyone.  More details on the Public FTP thread.

Several other files that were not on BVEStation are now on our servers.  Their original mediafire links have been put as an alternate link.  We are also looking for other generous users to mirror some of our downloads, and will allow us to direct link to them.  (This means no file hosting services, we also won't accept anyone using HostGator, simply because it'll be a copy of a file on the same/similar server.  Unless you are a dedicated server customer.)  This can also be a good way to advertise your website/services/etc. you will need to contact me for advertising services.

Station Talk / BVEStation's Public FTP for All Users
« on: June 28, 2012, 07:34:36 pm »
Today, we're going to open a public FTP for all users.  This public FTP will allow anyone to upload/download files that have yet to be moved into the downloads section.  To be more detailed, we will require a lot of trust in our users so that files in this public folder don't go missing, or lost, etc.

For Developers:
Any developer who wishes to get the file placed onto BVEStation Servers as easily as possible can use this service.  By using the public FTP, you can upload your file onto our servers, and not have to worry about uploading it to a file hosting service where users often have to wait to be able to download.  I will then be able to easily transfer the file into the downloads section.  This will speed up the process as it is often just a one way upload (you upload directly to our servers), and not upload, download, upload as it is now (developer uploads to file hosting service, I download it locally, I reupload it to the site).

For Users:
No need to worry about using file-hosting services, no waits, no signups, no ads.  Just log into the FTP, and download the file you want that hasn't been placed into the downloads section yet.  Want to share a file with all users? You can do that here too.

So I'll reiterate that this service can be abused greatly, because of everyone being able to access one location, with all add/delete/etc. permissions.  With that said, please don't abuse it, put garbage on it, or do other destructive things on it, we will close it if things go out of hand.

We'll also want a naming convention so this is how it will go, <username>.<filename>.<extension>
so for example: ipaclansite.SASv2.0.7z

For now, here is the information to access the public FTP service.

<The Public FTP is no longer available.>

All file uploads are to be uploaded to the incoming folder only.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Station Talk / Permanent Teamspeak Closure
« on: June 21, 2012, 12:41:05 am »
Hey guys, I'm sorry to inform you that the Teamspeak Server will now be permanently closed because the server admin required additional resources on the server, and thought it wasn't worth trouble to continue running Teamspeak Service for BVEStation.  We would've notified you guys earlier, but I was notified last minute as well.  We thank our anonymous donor for the time he's given us running the service for our users.

As far as a new Teamspeak Server, there are no plans to open a new one anytime soon.  All Teamspeak Services, and its related programs, such as the Motorman's Insitute will be halted indefinitely.  We are not taking requests for user hosted Teamspeak Services either, please do not contact us regarding it.  We recommend all users who wish to use a form of BVEStation Community services to utilize BVEStation Chat, visit the BVEStation homepage and click chat or use the forum.  Thanks.
