Route Building
« on: February 28, 2011, 05:47:05 pm »
So I'm around here on BVEStation alot more than i used to be and I'm seeing some pretty good stuff being made. I'm thinking, "I could do some of that" but I don't understand coding by hand it will take YEARS for me to understand it and i don't have time like that. I also hear of RouteBuilder alot. My question is, does RouteBuilder code for you? You just place the object and it's there?

If so, (sorry to say) screw train making (for me). I just don't get these codes. The train.dat file is really what gets me. All these codes and im like, "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???"

If i could get a response i would take a stab at RouteBuilder once more and create a shuttle train just to get the feel of things on it.

Thanks!

I think you can try routebuilder to create a short shuttle. It's too buggy to try anything large like a full line, but when you export the code you can look at it yourself and learn the commands

i personally feel that building Trains is ALOT easier then routes. i tried route builder and it kept giving me a bunch of errors so thats out of the question for me . i am also eager to learn how to route build so if you find a break through it may benefit me also  8) lol . im also aware of the tutorials out there , im just to busy to sort them out .

A problem I encountered all the time in RB was that if your map was too large the tracks would disappear eventually.
And Dennis Lance's tutorial is the best one to use, it even gives you a dummy route for you to code along with it and teaches you a few advanced commands

Pls do not use RouteBuilder,its a pain in the behind. Go with handcoding! Its a monster, but it gives u more accuracy. Trust me, I felt like u at one time, but I think i have bout 60% of it down.

@jup thanks
My question because I've seen alot of this.
How the hell is Routebuilder a hassle? All you gotta do is program it however you want instead of hand coding and i hear from all of you is tiresome but helpful!

Most (if not all) that said/agree that Routebuilder is a hassle should have had experience with Routebuilder before, so they know what they're talking about. Now, by experience I don't mean using it once or twice. Perhaps when you use it for months or even years then you'll understand what the problems/hassles of Routebuilder are.
On the other hand, there's also preference. Many prefer and suggest hand-coding, but you don't have to hand-code if you find Routebuilder useful. Nobody's forcing you.

I've tried making a route with it twice, like I said, it has major bugs in it that make it difficult to work with, and the grid is so small you'll be laying 25 m of track thinking it's like a mile
