General BVE/OpenBVE / Can someone help me here?

No one seems to answer these question? I haven't played or downloaded this game yet. I wanted to know if you can make up your own system (own stations, own routes, make up locations and colors of the routes, etc) Is that possible or is it only based on the real world NYCT stations and routes?
