Major Fleet Changes For The IRT
« on: May 14, 2011, 08:57:08 pm »
well i just heard from a t/o friend of mine that theres going to be a major fleet change for the IRT.

Half of the R142A fleet on the (6) based out of Westchester yard are going to the Kawasaki plant in Yonkers to be converted into R188's for the (7) based out of Corona Yard.

The Sets Of New Tech that is going to the (7) line will be replaced with R62's that will go to the (6). looks like 62's is coming back to the bronx.

rumor is also spreading of various 62 sets heading back to the (4)

finally the surplus of R142A's from the (6) will head to the (2) line. being based from 239th st yard A.K.A wakefield yard. making the (2) and (5) lines fully new tech train lines even though they are already full of new tech.

also the (7) line is rumored to get CBTC control signals when the final 142A's are converted.

CBTC is also rumored to be placed on the (2) and (5) lines when the surplus arrives.

sources are: 180th st, unionport yard masters, Tamara from teamspeak and bebo.  looks like this is going to be the first overhaul of the 142A fleet.

I could've sworn that the (2) and (5) Trains are all NTT already. But anyway, I have a feeling that you're correct since that's what's been going on (rumor) for the past few months.

The (7) Flushing Line CBTC is not a rumor its a few years old news.
7731-7810 from the (4) will be leaving since they have the CBTC kits already installed unlike the rest of the fleet.

Noooooooo. why take away the r142a from the 6 if they allready did the station updates for them. taking them away will be causing major problems. that is just my opinion

Because all the (4)'s R-142A's can't cover the 7.Thats why.

but the 6 train is the busiest line on the east side in the bronx during the morning and the afternoon. i take both the 6 and the 5 to get to school. and the 6 train needs the extra trains. the trains are all ready crowded

Adding more trains to a line with a three minute headways in Lower Manhattan isn't smart.

CBTC has nothing to do with NTT(new technology train). The R143 had new trains for some years before they upgraded the systems to CBTC(communication-based train control)

the 2/5 were always completely NTT..there hasn't been an R62 on the 2 in a LONG time

the R142A's will be sent to Yonkers to be convered to R188's for use on the 7, that is correct.

the R62A's that have been displaced by the R188's will most likely end up on the 4/6.

I don't know if ALL of them will leave. But most certainly the CBTC ones installed already will go to the (7) which are cars 7731-7810.The lowest number R-142A supposedly on the (4) is 7661 which I have yet seen on the 4 but w\e.

I feel that the 62's back on the Lexington would do no justice anymore for the tourists at least.  I'm sure the daily commuters like myself won't mind or just don't care (they just bring us to point A to B.)  All I know is whenever I get to 42nd Grand Central, tourists and R142/A's mix VERY well and it helps them out more then usual.  I've never rode the Lexington when they were all 62's and can't say the same effect with the tourists, but that's just me now.
