BVE/OpenBVE Support / Handle Object Creation
« on: January 17, 2011, 04:54:17 pm »
OK - I need some tips on creating a handle object for my Cineston controller.  I've tried a few methods:

 - Started with a photo - chopped out the entire handle and tried rotating using paint.net layer rotating tool and perspective plug-in for various angles and all looked horrible
 - Started with a photo - tried chopping the handle into pieces (for a center, a handle, and a knob) to move around in certain combinations.  Still didn't look right.
 - Tried creating one from scratch in Paint.net - (My own drawing skills are terrible.

I could go with a simple black handle for version 1 of the Septa M-3, but was hoping to create something a little more proto-typical even if it's not photo-real.

What do you all typically use?  Do you use an object creator (like the various cylinder generators I see for download) or do you use some other methods.  I need some good tips here.

Thanks,
Lee

Other Projects / Budd Septa M-3 Thread (Philly Market-Frankford El)
« on: January 13, 2011, 10:43:51 pm »
The Budd built Septa M-3 Market-Frankford line cars were built from 1960 to 1962 at the Philadelphia Budd Plant.  Philly was the first city to put in a larger order of Transit cars with Budd.  These cars were used on the Market Frankford line from 1960 until the later 90's when they were replaced in full by the Adtranz M-4's.

Very early stages of the M-3's panel texture.  Will be adding the Cinestron controller, compressed air hard lines, wiper motor box, door closed indicator (single green lamp), perhaps a few light switches and sun shade.  It's a start.

Other Projects / Philly Market-Frankford Line

Hey all.  Quick  intro.  I did the Auran Trainz thing about 3 years ago and got in deep very quickly.  So quickly that I found that I wasn't enjoying it because I was spending too much time learning route creation, 3D stuff, etc, etc, and not enough time running trains.  If I wasn't doing that, I was spending time trying to get the program to run as well as I wanted to trouble free...

And now... I want to do it again.   :o  I know the community is small for OpenBVE, but that's where I've decided to dive in this time.  That's mainly because I've seen, at least some interest in the line I'd like to develop in the BVE world next to virtually zero interest in the world of Trainz as large as it is comparatively.

My goal back then was to eventually build enough knowledge to design a layout closely resembling the Market-Frankford Subway/Elevated (or "Blue Line", or simply "The EL") in Philadelphia (along with the Budd M3's that ran that line from 1960 to the mid-90's).  I started to get pretty good with route building in Trainz, but never got to the point like I felt like I was ready to start working on the EL.

Coincidentally, I discovered a small handful of posts on the old forum regarding the Market-Frankford line.  I want to spend a little time getting up to snuff with OpenBVE and really hope to collaborate with a few folks, long term, to begin building this route as well as the M3's, Adtranz M-4's, (maybe even the old Pressed Steel A-8's and Brill A-15's).  I want to take my time -- go nice and slow so that I don't get burnt out instantly like I did when I was running the Trainz software.

A few pics of all the Market Street Elevated line and later Market-Frankford  line equipment can be seen here:

So -- I'm starting this thread in hopes of finding others who'd like to collaborate, and to dig up any old/unfinished content that may already exist.  I don't expect this will be done quickly, not even in a matter of months, so don't be shy and not chime in if you see this thread is a year old without much action.  Once the weather gets warm, I'll spend more time on outside activities, but once the cold hits again, I'll be back at it.

So -- who's out there?
