Title: What I recently discovered...might help people
Post by: r160bve on October 10, 2012, 04:53:13 pm
Hello everyone, what I recently did was install openbve on my older computer. I had no idea that it would work 2 times better then my newer one. Here are the specs on the older computer and new computer.

Older One:
1GB RAM
70GB HDD
64MB graphics card, NVIDIA
Windows XP
Processor: Pentium 4

Newer one:
2GB RAM
70GB HDD
integrated intel graphics, roughly 300MB
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
Windows Vista

The results I got were incredible. I got an average of 15-20 fps on the new F with 225m viewing distance with my new computer. NOW on my old computer, i get 20-30 fps with 600m viewing distance. I mean, its like a whole new world opened up. I think I know the answer to this but im not quite certain so ima ask it anyways. Anyone wonder/ know why?

"Integrated graphics" is the 1st big red flag, Vista is the 2nd.
The combination of these 2 cheap and bad ideas from Intel and MS, has shot your new PC in both feet!

One thing I have noticed myself. The OpenBVE version on mac is a lot faster and has a ton less lag than on Windows. I can run the new R46 on the (D) flawlessly, just to show you what kind of operation we are running here.

iMac
Mac OS X 10.5.8
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

I also have a laptop, but not planning to put OpenBVE on it.

MacBook Pro
Mac OS X 10.7.5
2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

That integrated is probably 5x better then that 64MB graphics cards anyway.

Back to OP, it's not much of a discovery, having an upgraded system is always beneficial.

I hope you didn't buy that newer laptop within the last 2 years..

I have that laptop, and openbve runs fine.

is there something wrong with openbve if it takes a while to load?

Not really, all that means is that your RAM is a bit low for all the specific objects to load up. Certain routes require some time depending on what computer you have.

what do u think is the best processor on a computer for openbve?

My personal opinion is core i7 although it could be pricy. A core i5 or i3 should get the job done though.

Agreed. i7 is the way to go.

The usual bottleneck for openBVE is your graphics card and memory. Unless you have a relatively slow processor, the processor shouldn't be whats holding it back.

An i3 is more than plenty for openBVE.

for example i have an AMD vision processor,it is a 2.20ghz and i have 3 GB installed but only able to use 2.75 GB. is it my processor or the amount of RAM that is slowing me down?

(somewhat newish here, but been following this community for quite some time)

Hmm... The R46 only reaches 15fps here, even while I have a custom built system with an i5-3450, 8GB ram and an AMD Radeon HD7850, with up-to-date graphics drivers... And the i7 is usually overkill unless you're into raytracing and that sort of thing.

The problem is that openBVE uses immediate mode to render the objects and graphics, as has been observed in the source code. While mudwrestle and i are looking to resolve this issue to optimize for performance, for now, openBVE relies mostly on the graphics processing unit (GPU = Graphics Card) until we resolve this issue.

So im guessing that the integrated graphics was holding me back? Since I now get much better fps.....?

Yeap, I have a 3570K and a 7850 and the R46 doesn't run properly either. Its either an optimization issue with openBVE itself or crap drivers. Don't know which, though. Since michelle has left there has only been 1 update to openBVE..

An expansion card would always be better then the integrated unless the expansion card is older then the integrated system, per say.

How is it my laptop has slightly lower specs then your custom build, yet I have a higher FPS rate then you with the R46 on exterior.

I'm running an i5-2430M, 8GB RAM and GT 525M ;; I have double the fps you have with the R46 in exterior mode.  That's even with another game running in the background.

So it's clearly an AMD only issue, so either requires AMD to make a new driver (how are we're going to notify them anyway) or a renderer update for OpenBVE... (of which I hope odakyufan will quickly integrate in his codebase)

@CT1660 and Mudwrestle (indirectly): good luck!

I knew I should have waited for a GTX 660..

Well with crap experience with every other AMD device I've owned dating back to 2005 I don't think I'll be buying AMD stuff anymore. First it was a failed graphics chip in a laptop, second it was an insane amount of BSODs with drivers in another laptop and now a 7850 has trouble handling a low-demanding program like openBVE. How pathetic.  Intel and nVidia the rest of the way on for me

Ever since AMD absorbed ATI it's been a completely different company, but the fact remains that OpenBVE was built to optimize its performance on the AMD processor, which was built for mostly gaming, rather than multimedia, like Intel. Besides, regardless of the graphics card or processor, the fact remains that OpenBVE draws all of its rendering capability directly from the GPU, whereas other simulators(and video games) are integrated to the system and utilize DirectX, and/or OpenGL, so it actually demands more than what you all think, but in the very weak areas where the system can't offer it. In order to improve capability and maximize development, this one hurdle must be overcome so that we expand the limits of our projects.
