Top: Original (1969) CTA 2200 series Budd built married pair rapid transit "L" cars, with the chicago signature "Blinker Doors".
Bottom: Re furbed in (1992) by you guys very own Coney Island Overhaul Shops.
This is how they look today still in revenue service on the BlueLine (cta's west-NW route to O'hare airport).

They are the oldest models in the fleet, which are about to be retired when the CTA receives the rest of the new 5000 series Smart cars.

Bet you guys didn't know that.lol. Now don't these remind you guys of a cross between the R38/R40 slant

You know I almost forgot they used those in spiderman.LOL! Good memory. Well now out of a 300 car fleet, we're down to our last 90. I grew up on these and will be heartbroken when they retire these bc it was trains like these that made our system unique from every other city. They would probably keep them if it wasn't for the blinker doors bc they're not wide enough to meet ADA standards.

These are slated to replace them. (Bombardier 5000 series SmartCars)

That design P's me off bc they look exactly like these............

Which are 20years older. MK 3200 series. They could've come up with a new design. Smh. Still gotta love the fluted sides on all 3 of these. Like I love them on the R32/38.

Seems almost like an IRT version of the R42.

I like the wheels and trucks. The lights remind me of Phillys own B-IV

If that train would be used in NY's system that would be the exact make up. Too cool.  ;)
I said the same thing about the B-IV when I first saw them. When I first saw video of the train, the squeals sound just like ours.
Does Budd manufacture those too?

Interesting trucks...
Those trucks are more closely related to PCC Trolley trucks than subway car trucks. Very interesting outboard bearing design they have.

That's bc the most of our old fleet I-E; 4000,6000,1-50 > (all built in the PCC era) and the 2000 series cars all had interchangeable parts with the PCC trolleys and the 2200 series was no exception. Although it was the last series to have that truck design. That design would prove to be an epic-fail bc they were made with heavier materials,so intern wore down faster.

Those trucks, nearing their life's completion, would begin to ride rough and be in need of a massive overhaul. Which is why CTA wanted them. This was a back-door attempt to save future $$$ They had a large surplus of parts seeing all the PCC cars we had left over in the graveyard. (Skokie Shops) The major problem, something CTA didn't plan for, was that our system,(built like a subway system for lighter railcars), had begun to rapidly deteriorate due to system neglect in the 70's/80's.

It had gotten weak over the decades form all the heavy equipment in the system and those trucks were the nucleus of the most of the damage. So they tried a different design (which is what we have today) that would soften the blow of the rail car's weight to the structure and tracks. Still, without them repairing the damage that had already been done, it was too little too late.

Budd closed here a long time ago. In like the late 70s. They made the Almond Joy M3's on the Market Frankford Line before getting moved to Germany i believe. The B-IVs were made by Kawasaki, and they've been upgraded over time because they never used to squeal like that until 2009-2010

Budd closed in the mid 1980s. If I remember correctly, the LIRR/MNRR M3/As were the last cars produced by the budd company.
They were bought by Thyssen-Krupp.

yup you're right.

Budd also built cars for Baltimore, and cars for Amtrak, The Metroliners. We also built our Silverliner II and III cars, which are soon to retire once the last of our Silverliner Vs come in

Don't forget Atlanta too. Also Budd built some of our first stainless steal commuter rail cars for METRA.

You know I was watching some video of the B-4's the other day and noticed that too. Like CTA they have before some turns and especially the tight ones the inner greasing rail to sort of minimize the squeals. It doesn't seem to help those b-4's.
