does any one think R68's are getting shitty
« on: October 04, 2011, 08:29:41 pm »
excuse the language but it is true I mean my example is that this morning when I was on the B train
we waited at 135th street because there were locked doors the only thing we heard over the
speakers was "partner hold the train the doors are locked" I had the same experience in october
2010 at 161st street when someone held the doors and they just got stuck and not to mention
I mean anyone notice they are slowly starting to rust they aren't just shitty but also are starting
to get old what's next them looking like the R40's with duck tape holding it together

Well the MDBF numbers are getting to be a joke.

I agree but only 40% I like the R68s and R68A's
But the Issue I have is in my commute they are getting Rusty and they are seeming slower and so on
They are fine for now in my opinion I do I personally can agree with Error kinda
And if you do a search on the R68's The MTA does plan on making them NTT in 2015 or something around there

do you mean like a conversion like the R142A to the R188

What he means is entirely different. The R142A's are NTT already. Those R68's would have to be completely redone. New trucks, install computers, etc.

From what I remember they were proposing the idea of converting the sign panels of the R68's to look like the R44/46's or something like that.

The idea was to convert all the side and end signs to NTT type, install FINDs, and implement a system for automated announcements.

IDK if the plan is still alive though.

I really hope they don't, If they wanted to do that, then why just wait for the R179 order, or even better, why didn't Concourse be apart of the R160 Order? if they wanted to (NTT'ified) the R68, i would rather ride a R160 (B) or (D)

I'm sure installing parts to a not that old train would be more cost efficient then ordering a new fleet.

I doubt they're getting rusty(stainless steel) also most if not all 68's got a repainted face(bonnet).
Age maybe catching up to them but trains have their problems they aren't perfect ya know.

The biggest problem right now on the R68As (and some R68s) is that the brakes are VERY finicky and take a long time to release. Of the 6 station under/overruns I have seen, 5 of them were R68As and the 6th was an R68.

Actually stainless steel does rust, just not as easily. Without maintenance a stainless steel carbody will also succumb to corrosion.

I was on a R68 that overran Fordham and the motorman had to come out the cab just to see how bad he overran it. He even threw on the emergency brake and the train was a door and half over the station at Fordham station.

I've seen a fairly high amount of near-over/underruns in the R68As.
T/Os let go of the brakes halfway through the station and pull for some more air but nothing happens, almost always ended up with really heavy full service braking at the VERY last second and maybe a curse heard from the cab. I've seen that happen countless times.

I still like the R68's as i grew up with them on the N line when i lived in Astoria, I know they look obese but just something about them that no other train has, it looks like the inside of a R46 but with a stainless steel interior, and it has the propulsion of the R62A, meanwhile the R160's are rusting as well, and they have only been in service for the past 5 years or so, and the seals at the end of the cabs look like they are about to come off.
