This is the official update thread for the R38.
If any updates are to be made, you can read about them here.
In addition, all questions and comments about the R38 can be made here.
-
If anyone can convert the R38 to BVE4 compatibility (It is quite a task I warn) please PM me.
-
I will be releasing a new version of the R38 very soon that includes some minor realism enhancements and fixes.
Changes Include:
· The second power notch of the controller had a black edge on the right, this has been fixed.
· I have reduced the aliasing on the pressure gauge to a certain extent.
· When the reverser was in forward, there was a little black line cutting between the reverser handle and receptacle, this has been fixed.
· When the reverser was in forward, it was a little too high on the panel, the inverse was true for when the reverser was in reverse. This has been fixed.
· A small tweak was made to the right side of the panel that included only 2 pixels, it is hardly noticeable in OpenBVE.
· I lowered the height of the cab as per the requests of several people.
· I also tweaked some colors in the exterior.
I have sent the updated R38 to error46146 for release.
As always I am still looking for people to port the R38 to BVE4... :P

The Updated R38 is out on the downloads section. Have fun operating!
-
I'm working on yet ANOTHER update to address member input about the R38's handling (Mainly the braking behavior).
This update will take longer than the previous one to finalize and release, but expect it soon.
-
A surprise is coming.......

A surprise is coming.......
I love surprises. By the way, I gotta talk to you. Some of it has to do with the R38.
-
Oh boy a suprise!!!
-
I am pleased to announce a BIG update to the free R38 add-on for OpenBVE as contribution to the BVEStation community! This update one took quite a bit of time to produce.
List of features for this update (3.2.1):
- Much more accurate cab position
- More realistic brake behavior at lower speeds (That delay at 5 MPH during the switch from dynamic to full air braking is now much shorter and a lot more realistic)
- Improved sounds that fade in ever so slightly so it doesn't sound "Sharp"
- Improved Dark Panel
- Improved physics for the simulation of toppling and derailments (Hopefully NOBODY will have to see this improvement ;D)
- Minor tweaks were made to the train.dat that do not affect how the train operates
- ANNDDDD..... Now the .7z package includes a 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 Car version of the train, so you can realistically operate the R38 on ANY B Division line! And the .7z archive is only 10MB!
I also added a suspension creak noise in to the train's folder, however it is not implemented because the openbve causes the train to sway when stopped at the station, making weird and unrealistic noises. However it sounds great when the train is moving! ;) I could use some help with this as I do not know how to either make the train not sway at the station or make the sound only play when the train is moving.
The new R38 should be uploaded soon!
Other development news: Because I will be focusing my work on the R33-WF and R33-ML, this will probably be the last update for a while (but definitely not the last)
I could use some help converting the train to run with BVE4.
I also need somebody to work a bit on the exterior (to make the roof curved, "clean up" some of the edges, add in poles, etc.....)
-
This is just great to hear... I'll definitely be running this train tomorrow night.
-
Great I'mma try this out in a bit but I always got and get a nasty heavy lag for the R-38.Only train that does that.
-
Nice! Can't wait to check it out.
-
The lag might be caused by the use of alpha channels for panel textures. I got rid of some but a few are still there because they add detail to the cab in the form of partial transparency.
-
I'm not sure why you used alpha channels in a train panel, honestly. They produce great results, like you said, but as stated, they create a heavy lag, most particularly due to the time it would take to process the alpha channels. I would suggest sticking to the regular blue transparency.
BStyles
-
Well at the time there was some reason for why i used them. I think that I will change them all back to blue transparency with the exception of the panel.png because the alpha channels on it all for the simulation of dirt on the window, etc.
Also I forgot to mention that the train's textures were synced to a Huey PRO color calibration device and that the train's dimensions in the train.dat have been re-calculated to the accuracy of around the nearest 100,000th! ;)
-
I just received the train package from DJ Hammers, I'll have it up on the site by tomorrow so sit tight..
-

Wow! I'd say that's REALLY accurate!
-
The R38 has been uploaded onto the site..go to the Downloads page ( http://www.bvestation.com/downloads.php (http://www.bvestation.com/downloads.php) ); it should be the first one..Enjoy!
Just a little warning: the download may be only 10MB, but you'll need well over 100MB of disk space for the entire package as he included the R38 in various configurations (2,4,6,8 and 10-car train). You do not need to install the entire set.
-
Just tried it and I LOVE IT!! Appreciate your hard work and dedication in creating this train.
-

Thanks! ;D I'm glad that you enjoy it. Things like this take months of hard work to create.
I have received word that the description for the R38 on its download page is out of date. This should be corrected soon.
-
The next update for the R38 is in progress. Various inaccurate things are being corrected and a lot of sound improvements are being meticulously worked on by yours truly.
-
Yo, lemme know if you need some help
-
That's alright Jose, but I have everything under control right now. But how are things on the L going? Just curious.
-

Cool. Well, the L is stopped for now, mainly because I don't have time, but whenever I get a couple of minutes I'll do a thing here and there

Ok so today I managed to finally run the R38 on a PC, which means that I could test out plugin functionality. There were a few things I noticed.
1: The horn button animation doesn't work for me.
2: The wiper switch graphic looks weird when the wiper switch is in the "on" position.
3: Pressing pageup 2, 4, 6, 8, (and onwards counting by 2) times results in the wiper staying on but the switch saying that the wiper is off.
Does anyone else have these problems or is it just me?

I don't use the train much b\c of that lag but when I used it for my music vid the horn animation I didn't see anything. Not sure about the wipers though. But will or do you consider on making a version without the alpha channels?
-
The current version of the R38 doesn't utilize any alpha channels except for places where they are specifically needed for graphical functionality such as ambient light. Depending on your graphics card you may experience lag; older and lower end graphics cards provide very poor depth sorting performance. Try updating your graphics drivers if you haven't already.
I don't really plan on releasing a version without alpha channels right now because it is very likely that due Moore's law, in the very near future, all computers (And most of today's) will easily be able to process alpha channels without any lag (I got no lag with the train using an ATI Radeon HD 4350).
But yes the horn animation issue seems to be confirmed. I looked over the code and could not find anything wrong, is there anyone out there who can help me out with this? Knowing how most of the bugs in my work have been found and corrected, it is probably something really simple like a spelling error... lol
Also does anyone know how to convert the .dll plugin in the R38 to a .NET plugin so it is compatible will other OS'es such as OS X and Linux? If the plugin can be converted to run on normally on a mac, I could devote more time to the quality control of the plugin features.

If you can get your hands on the source code then you should be able to just compile it into a .NET Plugin
-
Ok work on the R38 has started up again. There is no limit to the attention to detail I want to implement on this train. ;D
A couple of goals for the next release:
1: Convert the .dll plugin the train uses in to a .net plugin. I really have NO idea how to do this and I have no experience at all with coding .net, C#, C++ etc..... (Damn school has no engineering program... :'().
2: Fix the horn animation so it actually works. I really have no idea what is wrong with this thing, I looked at the code hundreds of times and it looks like it should work....
3: Find a way to improve the dynamics of how the windshield wiper switch works.
4: Implement the open and closing side window feature (The code is actually present in the current version, it is just a matter of doing A LOT of tweaking and texture work to get it working right.)
5: Find out what is causing lag on some computers (May be caused by problems with integrated graphics chipsets)
6: Improve the exterior, notably the front.
7: Reduce the file size of the train.
8: Implement some sound improvements.
9: Tweak the braking behavior. While the train brakes realistically in terms of movement, the brake system itself (Such as air pressure values) is not true to the real train.
10: Fix some weird graphical glitches with the power and brake controllers in low brightness. (How on earth do I fix this?)
11: If possible, greatly improve the cab light feature.
12: Possibly implement animated wheels and pivoting trucks. (Not sure if this is a go)
-
just a question are you planning on making an 8 car R38 for the C train service in openbve
-
There is one in the current package.
In the full .7z file that can be downloaded from BVEStation, there are 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 car versions of the R38.
Rollsigns can be changed using the commands listed in the train.txt to display the C line designation.
-
thanks
-
you can try looking at a C/++ for dummies book. That's pretty much all you need since the plugins pretty much use if/and/or statements to create events. Then you just compile it
-
A little update as a precursor for things to come:
Last weekend I spent ~6 hours in the subway recording some new sounds to replace the controller sounds with something a little more realistic. I also replaced a couple of other generic sounds. No graphics work has been done so far but I am going to start up on some work in the future. I also gathered some miscellaneous textures for the exterior.
I will be spending the next couple of my weekends gathering sounds and textures in the subway. It isn't fun, but this work will go a long way at improving the train.
That is all, a small update but the beginning of some nice things in the future!
-
Quick update:
I have been up all night working on sound improvements. You can now hear the click sound when the door indicator lights up. I also did some adjustments to some sounds that included things like fading and volume adjustment to make everything blend together better.
Are there any other suggestions for sound-related improvements? I'm going down to the city on Thursday for the better part of the day to get sounds and textures, so get your word in now. ;)

-
the brake release sounds, the only play when the train is stopped. Do you think you could fix that?
-
Motor Motor Motor Motor! :)
-
I have sent in an updated version of the R38 to the BVEStation submissions email.
It isn't a large update, mostly QA/QC work and some sound and graphics tweaks.
However, the braking issues below 5 MPH have been fixed to the best of my ability.
I will implement new motor sounds from error46146 and Rikabs' R46 once it is released (both use the same 1257E1 GE motors). Animated trucks from the R46 will also be implemented.
So basically major progress on the R38 will remain at a standstill until the R46 is released.
-
Mr Railfan sould do a R38 panel for u ;D
-
Mr Railfan should do a R38 panel for u ;D
Unfortunately because the R38 was retired by the time I had started developing it, getting a clear cab picture was and still is nearly impossible.
So I've gotten as close as possible to a photoreal cab, with 80% of it photo textures.
-
I don't mind the current cab, but I think it really needs a new controller, perhaps one taken from the R32 or something since their controllers are pretty much identical, that old R68-style controller that has been used for many years now just does not look right in an R38 cab
-
yeah i am looking for a new controller. Unlike car types still in service, it's really hard to find R38 cab textures that are usable and even controller textures in general.
-
u sould do the R40 Slant next

Subwaytrainoperator5 has a point most of the SMEE's had or have identical controllers the R-32 and 38 are alike.

However here's a photo of the controller with the knob type probably a replacement.
http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?97853 (http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?97853)
Here's a shot of a R-38 controller with a regular style flat.
Either or controller type would be fine but I think the one without the knob thats flat would be better.

I actually don't know if it has been updated or not. Can an admin confirm if the new version has been uploaded?
-
The new R38 update is now on the downloads page: http://www.bvestation.com/downloadinfo.php?id=19 (http://www.bvestation.com/downloadinfo.php?id=19)
Download the new version for fixed braking, tweaked sounds, and slightly higher FPS.
-
I have the older version, and IDK if I should download the new version if this thing would be fixed :
On the middle rollsign on the version I have, there is no "Not in service" while the other rollsigns do. Is this realistic or something else?
-
The rollsigns have been unchanged since the last release.
The rollsigns are realistic, I have checked them using a rollsign I have at my house.
-
I am still working on my projects.
I don't have as much time as I used to have to gather textures and sounds, so I will be asking for contributions from the community a lot more.
Check out the contributor page regularly to see what I and other developers need in order to create our projects.

Several requests have been created for the R38.
Blue18 is working on the exterior and needs YOUR help to further the R38 project.
I also am in need of some material for the R38 as well, check the contributor page to see what I need.
If you wish to see this project progress, please do your part and contribute!

Work is starting up again on the R38.
Goals:
1: Increase framerates in the cab:
I realized that the way openBVE does depth sorting for PNG alpha channels is very
inefficient and slows down the simulation, so I am removing alpha channels where possible from the panel.
2: Increase the accuracy of the exterior
For its time, the R38 exterior was very good. It was one of the first with animated doors and rollsigns, as well as a
relatively geometrically accurate interior.
However, in today's day and age, it simply doesn't cut it anymore. When mudwrestle finishes his R32, I will use
his exterior as a basis for a new R38 exterior. All that will be needed is a bit of texture replacement, and
a little editing to the interior pole arrangement.
3: Better brake sounds
I am unhappy with the brake sounds while operating at speed. I will fix this. lol
I hope to have a finished version out shortly after mudwrestle releases his R32. However, I will be away in late summer,so this is all subject to change.
-
I have improved the brake valve sounds tremendously. When operating the train, one can now hear the air brakes
being used even at speed. Also, the sound of a small brake release has been added for minor brake adjustments.
A video showcasing these features will be coming soon.
-
Do you think you'll be able to fix the brakes giving up as the train is stopping?
-
It has already been fixed to a certain extent in the current version of the R38 that you can get on the downloads section, but braking characteristics under 5 MPH are being improved further, don't worry.
-
Here the preview vid of the R38 I promised you guys. Sorry about the overrun at 42nd street - port authority bus terminal. I should not have released the brakes to B6 two thirds of the way in to the station.
Also I apologize for the low video quality in the tunnels, MOV compression went overboard this time lol

-
Ok the sounds on this train are by far much, MUCH better than the ones in the current train. It sounds realistic, and the brakes seem a little better. Good job.
-
Yup! I finally got some nice brake valve sounds and loop sounds to use. This is also a result of me being able to ride the subway a lot more often now. I've recently got full 1080p Rail Fan Window footage of the entire C line, which now offers me a virtually unlimited amount of high quality sounds to use for the R38 and other BVE projects.
-
Nice job! Sounds are spot-on!

Lol that's heavy stuff. A bit unrelated, but are you planning on uploading that to youtube?
I am considering it, I just have very little time to do so. Keep in mind it is more than just the normal route,
it includes reroutes such as C to 2nd Avenue and C via A, as well as full express coverage from the A line
(As of yesterday :P)

Some news:
I'm leaving for a combined China/Mongolia vacation tomorrow. Development of the R38 BY MYSELF has been suspended until August 29th. Parts of the train will MAY or MAY NOT be worked on by other members of the development team while I am away .
Status updates may or may not be posted until August 29th, but do not worry, the project is not dead, and I have not left.
-
Like it DJ. Keep up the good work
-
I'm back, and working on the R38. Here is a preview of the R38 side:

not even close to done yet (i'm sure people will pick out the many things that are still part of the R32) yet...

Side is looking better. great stuff there.

Thanks for the links mudwrestle!
I am having some issues with the MTA logo object (I simply want it to not exist lol, I put an MTA logo directly on the side texture instead), and I can't manage to figure out where the number plate objects are so I can move them to their
appropriate spots on the R38. Could I just send you the train to remove the MTA logo object and move the number plates?
On a side note, if anyone out there has a picture of the R38's builders plate, please post it here or give me a link to it.
Right now, I am working on converting the R32 front to look like an R38 front.

It looks great! But the top, non-fluted half of the side could be better, it should be shinier so it looks more realistic
-
That is in the works as we speak. The entire side of the car is a bit too dark. I just need to figure out the solution to a weird issue I'm experiencing in which one side of the train is brighter than the other.

I can't see them either. They just don't exist at all. But pressing the "Quote" button reveals the link, which directs you to the image.
DJ Hammers, next time you post images from postimage.org, click "Copy Image Location" instead of copying the link shown on the address bar, and then put that between the img tags. That might help the users who can't see your pictures on this thread.

DAMN :o. Great job DJ.

Had a long day, so I'm a bit too tired to do a lot of work. I did do some work on the doors to make them look a bit "neater" and I lightened up the color of the carbody a bit to match them.
I'm trying to do a small amount of work each day or two, and post small updates relatively frequently so you guys get a better understanding of just how much attention to detail and thought goes into making a BVE project.

Non-stop improving indeed
-
Not bad!

Did some more brightness and color corrections to the carbody, and with the help of Mudwrestle, finished the number plates. Now, on the the ends of the car (Which at present are R32 GE front ends)

3 more hours of work.... did a lot of color and brightness corrections, etc.

Looks good. Question though. How come you removed the black box that you guys wanted inside the trucks. Thought it made it more realistic? ???
-
The exterior is based off of mudwrestle's R32 exterior, which already had the black box removed. I want to add it back in. I'll get around to it once I finish the rest of QA/QC.

well i took it out for reason...
check if my pc can wheel rotating...
i forget to put it back on

Wow DJ I can really see the differences in this car from your last release. Great job to you and Mudwrestle, I can recognize some of his designs on the car, such as the lights.
What is the news about the cab? I know you are going to change the handle to the one that Mr Railfan has, but are you making any changes other than that?

Since I don't have a full cab shot to use as a panel, I have to stay with this 70% photorealistic panel. I'm doing some changes to make it easier on the FPS, and I may do some texture work if I have resources to do it.

A suggestion. You should talk to Chris about getting some headlights and taillights for this train.

Already in the works, don't worry.
-
OK... I think the R32 and R38 should have a HQ release with 3D poles. It's more realistic, and a LQ release could be made if many people have FPS problems.
-
3D poles are completely unnecessary, for either version. Something like that would look a lot better in Trainz Railroad Simulator where detail is a big issue and the graphics are driven from computer resources and the video card. Keep in mind that making 3D poles(in other words, cylindrical objects) would create too many polygons when drawn out in Sketchup, for a program of this kind, and may alone just top the train's current poly count and lower frame rates significantly. This train is already high in quality and perfection, and even I can't ask for any more than that.

Just a little update for you guys -
I'm doing some work on the R38 right now behind the scenes. Mostly physics work, very little graphics work. I'm getting closer to finishing it. Mudwrestle is adding 3D headlights and a couple of other tweaks, and I'll do some finishing touches, some BETA testing, and then release.
Keep in mind, just because I'm not posting in my threads, doesn't mean I'm not working on my projects.
Here's a little preview video I made for you guys:

How come the rollsigns are scrolling by themselves?
-
It's because I'm using a mac. The plugin that runs the rollsigns and the headlights, along with a couple other functions, only functions correctly on windows computers.
On a Mac or Linux computer, the rollsigns will sometimes scroll randomly.
I'm hoping for somebody to take up the task of developing a cross-platform plugin so rollsigns can work on Mac and Linux computers.

the only thing is that the headlight fixtures are a single one with two bulb holes instead of 2 seperate fixtures.

Sorry I haven't updated you guys much on this project. School has been an absolute killer.
The 3D headlights are almost done, and I'm working a lot on getting the doors to be more FPS-friendly.
Expect a release this summer.

I know I haven't updated this thread much, but Mudwrestle and I have been working on the R38 regardless.
Mudwrestle put a lot of work in to making a 3D underbody for the R38. Here's some screenshots:
This train is nearing completion. Some more work on the interior poles has the be done, and stuff has to be neatened up and polished here and there. I'm hoping to get the R38 released either with the Q line or before the end of November (depending on which comes first).
-
Wow, you guys killed it with the R46, now this, a pretty well developed skeleton of the R68, I see an awesome static R40 which could be a potential future project, and I see the R143 and R160 in a few screenshots form time to time. You guys have it made as far as trains go. Great job once again.
-
The R38 exterior is close to finished. I know that the release date for the R38 has been pushed back around 4 months or so, but this was done because of an unperceived drop in the amount of free time I have, as well as to facilitate the completion of a more detailed 3D exterior model to complement the Q line.
Mudwrestle is close to finishing the underbody and exterior bonnet of the R38, following which I will complete some optimization and sound work, following which the train will be released.
Here's some screenshots of the R38 running on the Q line. These have also been posted in the Q line thread:

Some of the objects are missing because i couldn't put it in to my train directory folder. The problem was that some of the object file name was too long. Is there any way around this because without these object i couldn't be able to load the train completely. Overall this train look so amazing and so realistic. Great job everyone who contribute to this project. :)

That's incredibly odd. The file name should be a more than acceptable length for any modern operating system. I think the issue may be that the destination folder name length is too long. Try shortening the name of the folder you are putting the train in to.
In other news...
As of April 20th the R38 has been updated with improved braking physics, sounds and some cab/Panel adjustments. Enjoy!

I don't know why but when I use the R38 on the Q to Brighton its lagging. Terrible
is this only on the Q line or other lines as well?
Also, what are your computer specs?
-
The N also. But when I try it on the A it runs perfectly (all trains run perfectly on the A)
-
The N also. But when I try it on the A it runs perfectly (all trains run perfectly on the A)
thats because the Q and N are more graphics intensive than the A. If you want it to lag less, you would have to invest in a faster computer.
-
Well for example the R142 is working really good and doesnt lag anywhere. And it's the only train I can use for the V line. Btw do you know anything for it's update (cause I really want them to put some real wheels) or the update of the Manhattan bound 7? They kept us in touch with the progress before but there ain't anything new...
-
Is this the millionth time you've asked about the (7)? When the developers have updates, they'll post them. Otherwise, there are no updates. Many developers work. Some have school and work. Others have a family to take care of. I wake up each morning at 6AM, leave my door at 7 and sometimes don't get home sometimes until as late as 10 or even 11 PM, with even more work waiting for me at home. Some developers have it worse and work non stop and simply don't have time for routes. Some routes can go months with literally zero progress made because the developers simply have no time. The 7 will be released within a matter of time and constantly asking about it won't make it come out any sooner.
As for the R142, that is in development to. If you want an R142 with animated wheels, you can go learn, experiment, play around and add them yourself for the time being like me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMi4IIHjE8k (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMi4IIHjE8k#)

once the R142 has animated 3D wheels implemented on it, it will probably start lagging your computer as well. It's hard to have the best of both worlds.

I admire at what you're doing and what you do, but do you mind adding comments to the photos you post because several times I personally can't tell what is being polished up meaning the pictures look the same to me every time, albeit I'm sure there are minor differences(assuming). I can tell that they received a new set of trucks as well as looks as if you enhanced the R-38 front logo a bit. Other than that all the interior/exterior shots look the same.

different between new r38 goh and old r38 goh yall have.
for old r38 goh, too much load textures and bad textures and junk file. i made little flaws in there are seats and doors...
for new r38 goh, new shape and new texture and fps improvement and less junk file. correct doors and seats shape
