Jay Walder resigns, heads to Hong Kong MTR

http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2011/07/21/mta-chief-jay-walder-resigning/

Looks like the head of the MTA will be resigning and going over to work for the Hong Kong MTR.  Admist the MTA's budget crisis and service cuts, he still managed to bring some innovation to the MTA, things like countdown clocks, revamped website, improved access to information, and other little projects.  I personally think its a bad time to leave, especially after starting these new things then leaving them unfinished as he hands it off to somebody else to run.  What do you guys think about this?

A Good and Bad idea. Good because he won't **ck the system up anymore. Bad because the MTA is in hole.

To me, all he did was make the system more convenient for information. Other than that, he didn't really do anything

He helped the tourist as far as Information and certain things but to me he ran the M.T.A.
into the ground and put it through hell ruining the transit system and to not have any further complaint of it all he is ditching this transit system
That's my thought and my opinion

While I disagreed with some of his policies, he did inherit quite a mess. He managed to do a lot in a very short time to a system reluctant to accept reforms.
For that, I respect him.

Didnt hear much about him until he implemented the solar heated water at nearby Transit Yards (including Coney Island). Other than that I hope the new guy brings back the 7 Day Fun Pass (as quoted from 4 Express), which I totally agree with.

Albany messed the system up, Walder was the scapegoat. He managed to make some reforms which were good, but you can't really expect him to do tons with that budget.

Don't bank on it. Until the budget improves for the MTA, don't expect any improvements to service or the return of the fun-pass.

Yea, where's the money? I know being a transit fan and all, but all people really care about are trains and buses to get them from point A to B. Walder did do a lot, including
unnecessary expenses.

He did his best with what he had.  Albany screwed the MTA over, the Union and its members get pay raises screwing the MTA again.  You have 2 groups pulling the legs of the MTA, I think Walder did an exceptional job trying to balance them.  There is no way you can satisfy everybody in that sort of situation.  The service cuts were inevitable really.  Perhaps the money used to innovate the technology in the system could've been used to hold back the cuts or a fare hike, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't enough being that the countdown clocks were relatively inexpensive, and the new website job and advertising campaigns are merely specks of dust admist the whole financial crisis.

If you were Walder, you would probably take the offer for the MTR, run by a joint public/private corporation with government support, and a shitload of expansion projects. Sounds fun, being a visionary there without the fear of getting a bad image by politics and bureaucracy.  I still think Walder should ride out this whole mess in the MTA, he started these projects, he should finish them.

They care so much that the first LFS has the seats changed already... so they care
